We inform you that the IMO (International Maritime Organization) has imposed new rules at a global level to reduce the ocean pollution: IMO 2020.
Specifically, starting from 1st January 2020, IMO has set a limit for Sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships of 0.50% (current fuel oil bunker Sulphur content is 3.5%).
Maritime companies have two choices to be compliant:
- Use LSFO: Low Sulphur Fuel Oil 0,5%
- Reduce harmful emissions from HSFO and make them equal to those using LSFO 0,1% through the installation of a scrubber (cleaning tower) on each vessel.
Both alternatives impose huge investments. For this reason, carriers are announcing increases in the price of transportations (between 20% and 30%) starting from 2019.
